Would You Date Your Social Media Program? The Bad.

I love metaphors since they help paint a unique picture. As I thought about social media, I noticed there was a parallel in dating relationships. After all, social media is just as ‘social’ as dating, and for most of, we’re ultimately searching for a long-term relationship (if I’m not describing you, please play along for the sake of understanding my point).

So, would you date your social media program? Don’t laugh. There are a lot of dating ‘types’ that personify social media programs that you wouldn’t commit to. So, let’s start with the red flag types in hopes that your social media program doesn’t mirror one of them:

1. THE STALKER: This person crosses the line from genuine to invasive. You want them to stop calling you and find them border-line crazy. A social media program of this type invades your privacy and feels obnoxious, kind of like a lame pop-up advertisement.

2. THE SMOOTH TALKER: You like what you’re hearing, and they’re saying all the right things. Only for you to realize after a month that their words are cliche. A social media program like this says what you want to hear rather than saying anything original, meaning you’re going nowhere fast.

3. THE ONE-NIGHT STAND: No explanation needed. I’m sure you’ve found an awesome blog that seemed beneficial, only to get a 404 message the next week. This type of social media program starts off on a high note, but lacks the ability to commit for the long haul, only to become a one-hit-wonder in your memory.

4. THE POLAR OPPOSITE: While ‘opposites attract’ may have its appeal at first, it lacks a meaningful connection and can’t achieve common ground. This type of social media program fails to connect with its audience.

5. THE COUGAR: They’ve been around forever, and while ‘experience’ might seem sexy at first, there’s nothing sexy about being out-of-date when it comes to social media.

So, where does your social media program stand? Stay tuned for the types of personas you’d want to date when we take a look at ‘the good’…
